Sierra Leone: Ayoub Joins Call Against FGM

Businessman, activist and award-winning philanthropist has joined others to kick against female genital mutilation otherwise known as FGM.

The owner of Hotel Africanus said he is embarking on a special campaign to put an end to FGM, which he described as ungodly and therefore wants civil society groups and non-governmental organisations to do more in sensitizing the public about its negative effects.
Nasser Ayoub said the campaign to put an end to FGM has been successful in several African countries while the practice still continues in Sierra Leone unabated. He said FGM has serious consequences to the human health and will even lead to death through severe bleeding.
Ayoub cited a recent report by the UN Special Rapportuer on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or

Degrading Treatment or Punishment Manuel Nowak which stated that almost all women who undergo FGM experience severe bleeding, shock, difficulties in passing urine, trauma, pain and overwhelming infection.

He recalled how Nowak pointed out in the report that apart from the chronic pains and infections women experience, the cutting has a long term effect. He said FGM affects the reproductive system and decreases sexual enjoyment. Ayoub stressed that FGM is ungodly and that "there is no part in the Holy Quran or Bible which makes provision for FGM. Therefore, it is harmful and we must all join hands to put an end to it."

Ayoub said he has lined up series of activities to put an end to this act and therefore called on civil society groups and NGOs to do more in sensitizing the public about it.
He said he is working on plans to produce a short film about FGM to educate the public about its effect, among other things.
