Kenya: Suba Aids Control Unit Gets Sh2.8 Million Facelift

The Aids Control Unit in Suba district has been refurbished at Sh2.8 million. The health facility located at the Lambwe National Youth Service camp is the largest in the area.

The funds were donated by United States Presidents Plan for Aids through the Center for Disease Control initiative. Speaking during the commissioning of the facility, the director general of NYS Japheth Mwania said the health centre will play a vital role in screening and detection of HIV and TB. He added that it will also spearhead health education services as a preventive measure towards healthy living.

He urged the donors to replicate the facility to other units to create an enabling environment for promotion of healthcare to over 20,000 youths. Mwania appealed to the community to make use of the facility by accessing the services. He called upon the provincial administration to encourage members of the public to visit the facility. Mwania was accompanied by the CDC technical director Mercy Muthui, the country director of PATH Rikka Trasgrud, station commanding officer Elimards Akech, Suba DMOH Joseph Nyakwamba and project director ARIFU John Waimiri.

Mwania said the war on HIV/Aids is collective responsibility. Nyakwamba promised to post a laboratory technician and more medical staff to the facility. He said Aids prevalence in the area stands at 26 per cent. Nyakwamba said the facility with TB screening equipment would also help in the war against the disease and stop it developing into multi drug-resistant strain.
