46 die in Oyo fire, 2 siblings in Ogun

IBADAN – OYO State Government has said no fewer than 46 persons died while property worth N1.1 billion was lost to fire disasters in different part of the state in the last one year.
However, property worth N238.6 billion was saved from the inferno that ravaged some places in the state within same period.

This came as two siblings were roasted to death in a midnight fire, yesterday, in Ago-Oka area of Abeokuta in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was gathered that the fire disaster  which occurred at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, razed down the entire six-room bungalow  in the  area, claiming lives of a 12-year-old Lateef Akinwunmi and his five- year-old brother, Jumoke ,while they  were sleeping.

Though the cause of the fire was said to be mysterious, it was, however, gathered that the fire might not be unconnected with candle lit by their mother, identified as Basirat, in the room.
At a briefing, Oyo State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Yunus Akintunde,  yesterday, in Ibadan, said the state fire service rescued 46 persons, received 378 distress fire calls and undertook 95 rescue operations.
On the slow pace of construction of the road that links University College Hospital to Agodi Gate in Ibadan metropolis, he said the governor had ordered the immediate payment of money to the contractor handling the project and that it would be completed soon.

After completion, he explained that the government intended to put street light on the road to ease driving at night. According to him, the ministry was proposing to install solar-powered street lights along Yidi-Old Ife Road and Ikolaba-Custom in Ibadan in addition to the already completed ones.
