Death of corps members: We were wrong - Ekiti NYSC

THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ekiti State, on Wednesday, said it was misinformed on the death of two female corps members in an automobile accident that claimed the life of the president of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Ekiti State, Mr Ayo Afolalu and others.

The state coordinator of NYSC, Mr Nurudeen Baba-Ahmed, who addressed newsmen on the incident on Wednesday, said the information that two female corps members from the state were in the car in which the NULGE chief died, was wrong.
According to him, until late afternoon on Wednesday, he was still working to unravel the identity of the affected corps members, until contrary information came from relevant agencies.
“I received a call while at the passing-out ceremony in the camp on Wednesday that two female corps members had died in an accident.

Immediately, I contacted the Welfare Officer of NYSC in Benin. I realised through further information that the accident occurred near Nigerian Institute of Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) in Benin and I told the welfare officer.
“He went to the scene, did his investigations and even went to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where he was informed that the bodies of the victims had been moved to Ado-Ekiti.
“He later informed me that from what he gathered at the hospital, no female corps member was involved in the accident.”

The state coordinator, on Wednesday afternoon, said the State Security Service (SSS) in Ekiti State notified him that four persons died in the accident and that the four were male.
To further clarify the identities of the dead, Baba-Mohammed said one of the officials of NYSC in the stat went to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) morgue to identify the bodies and also affirmed that no corps member was there.
